Who invented the acoustic guitar?

The acoustic guitar was invented in the 19th century by a musician called Antonio Torres Jurado. He was born in Spain and created his first model of guitar at the age of 16.

He put forward four main criteria that he believed would make an ideal structure to create music with:

1) The sound should be loud enough to be heard without amplification

2) It should have a balanced, symmetrical form

3) It must look beautiful

4) Its physical dimensions must not take up too much space

For years Antonio tried unsuccessfully to make his dream guitar using traditional methods but found it impossible to meet all four criteria. But eventually, he came across a design for making guitars from papier-mâché which allowed him to bend thin strips of wood around a mould to create beautiful curves.

After taking 2 years perfecting his design, Antonio set up a musical instrument manufacturing workshop in 1841 and began creating guitars that adhered to all four of his original designs. His first guitar was completed on the 19th October 1842 – exactly 181 years ago today!

When he showed his new model to some musicians, one of them commented: “What an invention…it sounds like angels…it has soul!” (1)

And so the name ‘Antonio de Torres Jurado’ went down in history as the inventor of the Acoustic Guitar.

Where does the acoustic guitar originate from?

The first guitar was invented by a musician called Antonio Torres Jurado, who was born in Spain. The first guitar he created was made out of papier-mâché and took him 2 years to perfect. He lived between 1816-1892.

Guitars were originally built with extremely large bodies, necks, and fretboards which made them very difficult to play sitting down.

This changed significantly when Torres developed the smaller ‘classical’ body shape which is still used today by acoustic guitars everywhere including flamenco guitars, steel-string guitars, and jumbo guitars – just to name a few!

What is an Acoustic Guitar?

The acoustic guitar is a stringed instrument that involves plucking metal strings with a pick or finger to create music. It normally has six strings and sounds best when played using an amplifier. The sound of an acoustic guitar is usually described as warm, deep, and rich in texture with a strong bass range. In many ways, it can be seen as the opposite of an electric guitar which uses electricity to give out brighter tones and more defined lines.
